Summer & Winter Intensive Language Programs

(9 Weeks / 4 Weeks)

Overview

These short intensive courses are offered in between semesters to allow students to learn Arabic abroad without interfering with their normal academic schedules. Just a few short weeks in Jordan will not only improve your skills drastically, they can also help you free up time in your schedule next semester, catch up if you've fallen behind, or skip a full year ahead in your language studies.

An intensive course of study is the most time- and cost-efficient way for any students of Arabic to take their language skills to the next level. While enrolled in these programs, participants are exposed to the living language in a variety of settings, all of which are designed to maximize results and confidence in speaking:

  • High quality, results-oriented instruction that emphasizes spoken communication over complex grammatical structures
  • Immersive housing options such as host families and student dormitories
  • Structured activities, workshops and cultural education
  • Volunteering and internship opportunities
  • Excursions to fascinating historical sites and tourist destinations around Jordan such as the Dead Sea, Petra, Wadi Rum,
Jerash, Ajloun, Desert Castles, the Dana and Al-Azraq Nature Preserves, and more

Academic Information

Students in these Intensive Language Programs carry a 4 credit hour course load per session (4 weeks). All courses are taught entirely in Arabic, combining spoken Levantine Arabic with MSA in a way that reflects the use of the language by educated native speakers.

TO PUT IT SIMPLY:

  • Summer = 9 weeks = 8 credit hours = 1 full year of study at the university level
  • Winter = 4 weeks = 4 credit hours = 1 semester of study at the university level

Most students who enroll for short periods of time place into Arabic 1, 2 or 3. Click below for detailed descriptions of the standard language courses that are most prominent in Al-Mashriq's Summer & Winter Intensive Language Programs.

A Note on Language Immersion and Student Initiative

Living in Amman and going about daily life in Jordan is in itself a great learning experience. We pride ourselves on providing students with the linguistic tools they need to navigate real life situations, solve problems and become proactive in their own learning process. Generally, structured activities are “front-loaded” during the early part of the semester, after which point students are encouraged to take initiative in their own progress by planning independent exploration and creating organic relationships with local native speakers.

Students who benefit the most from study abroad are those who take responsibility for their own development on a daily basis.
